So the very first time is far slower than subsequent use. You can change it or ask it to recalibrate to work it out again. It then stores that in the preferences, so it knows which to use in future. The first time you run the program and load an image it uses every method and works out which is fastest on your computer. Which of these is being used is set in the Preferences.
